On the day

Lascaux IV is the complete, full-scale replica of the Lascaux cave near Montignac in the Dordogne — one of the greatest works of Ice-Age art, painted roughly 17,000 years ago and discovered by four teenagers in 1940. The original cave was closed to the public in 1963 to protect its fragile paintings and has never reopened, so the recreated cave is how the world experiences Lascaux today. Arrive at least 20 minutes before your timed slot to check in and join your group.

Frequently asked

Is this the real, original Lascaux cave?
No. The original closed to the public in 1963 to protect its 17,000-year-old paintings and has never reopened. You visit Lascaux IV, the complete full-scale replica that recreates the entire cave to the millimetre — the closest anyone can get to standing inside Lascaux today.
Is the ticket for a specific time?
Yes. Lascaux IV admits visitors in timed slots and tickets are time-stamped for a specific day and time. We book and hold your chosen slot so you skip the queue and go straight in. Arrive at least 20 minutes before your slot.
How long does the visit take?
About 2.5 hours — roughly an hour for the guided cave replica, then as long as you like in the workshop galleries, 3D cinema and exhibition.
Do children need this ticket?
This is the adult ticket for ages 13 and over. Children aged 5 to 12 use the reduced-rate child ticket; children under 5 enter free with no ticket required.
